The ”Trianon Syndrome”. Irredentism and revisionism in the Hungarian culture and politics as the manifestations of nationalism.

The main focus of this thesis is on the “Trianon syndrome” i.e. the sense of injustice experienced by Hungarians which was created by the Treaty of Trianon (June 4, 1920) and which manifests as the desire for irredentism and revisionism. Chapter 1 describes the origin of the Treaty, as a result of which Hungary lost 2/3 of its former territory and more than 3 million Hungarians found themselves in the newly created neighboring countries. Chapter 2 presents the manifestations of irredentism and revisionism in the Hungarian everyday life, culture and politics of the interwar period, and discusses the redrawing of borders during World War II. Chapter 3 is concerned with the “Trianon syndrome” present in the everyday life, culture and politics in contemporary Hungary. Moreover, chapters 2 and 3 provide the arguments on which the claims to border changes were based and the reasons that make the phenomenon under discussion permanent and constantly topical. The thesis shows that, although the longing for the pre-1920 territorial shape of the “Great Hungary” lives on in the Hungarian society, the “Trianon syndrome” has been caused mainly by the idea of nationalism, which was broken, when the numerous Hungarian minorities were left outside the new borders of the state.Tematem pracy jest „syndrom Trianon” – obecne wśród Węgrów poczucie niesprawiedliwości wywołane traktatem z 4 czerwca 1920 r., przejawiające się jako pragnienie irredenty i rewizjonizmu. Rozdział pierwszy zawiera opis genezy traktatu, w wyniku którego Węgry utraciły 2/3 historycznego terytorium, a ponad 3 miliony Węgrów znalazły się w nowopowstałych państwach ościennych. W rozdziale drugim przedstawione zostały przejawy irredenty i rewizjonizmu w życiu codziennym, kulturze i polityce węgierskiej dwudziestolecia międzywojennego oraz rewizja granic podczas II wojny światowej. Rozdział trzeci dotyczy „syndromu Trianon” widocznego w życiu codziennym, kulturze i polityce Węgier współczesnych. W treści rozdziałów drugiego i trzeciego znajdują się również argumenty, na których opierano żądania rewizjonistyczne oraz powody, które czynią zjawisko trwałym i stale aktualnym. Praca dowodzi, że – choć w społeczeństwie węgierskim silna jest nostalgia za kształtem terytorialnym „Wielkich Węgier” sprzed 1920 r. – „syndrom Trianon” wywołuje głównie idea nacjonalizmu, którą złamano, pozostawiając liczne mniejszości węgierskie poza nowymi granicami państwa
